Seashell Valley
CLOSED FOR THE 2021 SUMMER
Welcome to Seashell Valley, a unique, 10,000-year-old geological feature in the heart of the Manicouagan-Uapishka Biosphere Reserve.
Round out your visit to the Glacier Garden with a visit to this beautiful and fascinating natural feature, the only one of its kind in the world. Through a unique confluence of geology and circumstance, layer upon layer of shells were brought to this spot – now in the middle of a dense forest! The shells formed a deposit at the bottom of the Goldthwait Sea, an ancient sea sculpted by glaciers millennia ago. The deposit is 90% pure – an unheard of degree of purity for such a formation!
Your visit includes commentary by a trained guide with specialized knowledge of local geological history. Listen as you gaze in admiration at the 35-foot walls of this amazing natural amphitheatre. Eager students can end their visit by digging and identifying the large variety of shells. While these samples must be left on-site, there are many attractive and interesting souvenirs for sale in our gift shop.
